Adams County supervisors are preparing a new county budget that could include a property tax cut after many property owners were hit with larger tax bills this year following increases in land-value assessments.
The Adams County Board of Supervisors is scheduled to hear budget requests next week as members begin working toward a final spending and taxing plan for the fiscal year that begins in October.
It remains unclear how the new budget will compare with the approximately $43 million budget the county is operating under for the current fiscal year.
The possibility of a tax cut comes after increased property assessments resulted in higher tax bills for many Adams County property owners this year.
Supervisors are expected to finalize the county’s budget next month.
Historic marker planned for former supervisor Barney Schoby
A historic marker is planned near the Adams County Courthouse honoring Barney Schoby, the first Black member of the Adams County Board of Supervisors.
Schoby was first elected to the board in 1974 and died in June.
Supervisor Ricky Gray said plans are being made to erect the memorial honoring Schoby and his place in Adams County history.
County renews property mapping contract
Adams County supervisors have renewed a $10,000-a-year contract with Tri-State Consulting Services, which provides mapping services used by the county tax assessor to identify property ownership and land values.
Tri-State was first hired by the county in 2020.
Company executive Monica Dennis told supervisors Monday that Tri-State has worked through about 5,000 property deeds while mapping Adams County.
Dennis described Adams County as “a very challenging county to map,” citing old plantations and property records stretching back into the 1800s.
Tri-State uses geographic information systems, commonly known as GIS, to assist taxing agencies with property evaluation and analysis.
The company’s Mississippi operations are based in Philadelphia, and Dennis said Tri-State provides land-ownership mapping services for 40 counties.

Adams County Jail remains without air conditioning
The Adams County Sheriff’s Office in the jail facility continues to be without air conditioning as repairs remain stalled, said Sheriff Travis Patten. This is among the problems the 51-year-old building has endured for several years as Adams County supervisors remain undecided on constructing another jail. In the meantime, Adams County sends many inmates to neighboring Concordia Parish’s detention facility.
