Local residents are seeking answers following a decision that will close public access along the Diversion Canal levee between Louisiana Highway 28 East and Larto Lake beginning next year.
The Tensas Basin Levee District has voted to close the Diversion Canal levee road to the public effective April 1, 2027. The closure will eliminate public access along the levee from Highway 28 East to Larto Lake.
Under the planned changes, the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries will take over the portion of the levee extending from Highway 28 East to Hunt Bridge.
The remaining portion, from Hunt Bridge to Larto Lake, will be gated. Access to that section will be limited to private landowners who own property directly along the levee.
Once the changes take effect, members of the general public will no longer be able to use the levee as a route between Highway 28 East and Larto Lake.
