Adams County’s cost to insure its government properties and liabilities for the coming year has increased to more than $940,000, according to the county Board of Supervisors. The figure reflects a 9 percent rise and is attributed in part to the county-owned airport’s new passenger terminal.
The Board voted to renew the insurance coverage with a condition to pursue a less expensive policy next spring. The insurance plan presented to the Board by Natchez Insurance agent Johnny Byrne includes coverage for $66 million in county-owned structures. The coverage includes the Natchez-Adams County Airport hangar remodeled this year to become a passenger terminal. Byrne said the building is valued at $7 million.
United Express began providing commercial jet service at the airport in July.
Louisiana Mid-Continent Oil and Gas Association officials said Governor Landry’s plan to rein in diesel prices is counterproductive. The association’s president, Tommy Fauche, said banning U.S. diesel exports would raise prices for gasoline and diesel rather than lower them. Fauche said diesel pipelines are already at full capacity, and if exports were restricted, producers would still need to move the diesel they manufacture. He added that refineries would likely have to cut production, which would also reduce gasoline output and contribute to higher prices.
Ole Miss campus police are investigating the deaths of two students. Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs Dr. Sean Boda-Mead said the Lafayette County coroner’s office confirmed two student deaths. Mead said university police are in contact with local and state law enforcement. The students have not been identified, and the deaths remain under investigation.
According to Lafayette County Metro Narcotics, there are two separate investigations. Investigators said there is no confirmed evidence indicating the two deaths are connected at this time. Investigators also said packaged kratom sold from a retail store was found during both investigations.
In Baton Rouge, an LSU student alleges she was raped by a football player. The East Baton Rouge District Attorney’s office is investigating the allegation.
Kendall Danielle, who described the incident on TikTok, said she reported the incident to the school’s Title IX office and the LSU police department. She said the person admitted to the allegation during a Title IX hearing. Danielle said she was told “there’s possibly nothing that’s going to be done.”
LSU President Wade Russ said in a statement that the incident was handled professionally. District Attorney Hiller Moore said he is requesting that LSU turn over records from its investigation.
The Mississippi River and Natchez-Vidalia is reported at 16.26 feet and rising.
