NATCHEZ, Miss. – The city’s trash collector has missed some scheduled pickups in recent weeks, but Mayor Dan Gibson said Tuesday those complications should now be resolved. Arrow Disposal Service has been beset by mechanical and personnel problems, Gibson said.
Arrow is contracted to provide curbside pickup services three times a week for Natchez: twice for regular household waste and once for recyclable trash. Natchez residents directly pay $22.17 a month per household for the service. The arrangement includes two wheeled trash containers provided for every Natchez residence.
As Natchez’ garbage pickup contract with Arrow expires next year, Gibson has said he and aldermen in the coming months will work on strategies for “the best solutions for our citizens” in collecting their garbage and also “contain that expense going forward.”
The disposable garbage is being hauled to Waste Management’s south Adams County landfill after several years of it being taken to a landfill in Jefferson County near Fayette. The Natchez Board of Aldermen in May opted to go with WM’s Plantation Oaks waste dump at Sibley effective this month. Its $37-per-ton disposal charge is $9 less than what the Jefferson County landfill’s disposal fee would be.
While WM’s landfilling charge is higher than what Natchez was previously paying for using the Jefferson County facility, Gibson said it’s low compared to what some other towns pay for having their trash buried.

What is the truth on recycling? Are we recycling or putting recycled materials in the landfill?
