City aldermen paid tribute Tuesday to former Natchez mayor Butch Brown, who died a year ago, by asking the state Department of Transportation to name in his honor the city’s flyover bridge that connects U.S. 61 with Sergeant Prentiss Drive.
Aldermen also joined Brown’s son in accepting a resolution passed by the state Legislature commending the three-term mayor for his many accomplishments in Natchez and also as executive director of the Mississippi Department of Transportation.
The legislative resolution – presented by state Sen. Albert Butler of Port Gibson – noted Brown “was a man of vision, and that and his undaunted energy brought many great changes to Natchez.”
“To fully understand this complex man of many talents – in his reelection campaign in 1996 – he noted his many successes as mayor, and his slogan was ‘I may not be perfect, but I get things done.’ And so he did.”
In accepting the resolution Tuesday, son Larry Brown Jr. said his father would be “quick to accept the accolades” but also “quick to hand it off and thank the people who really got these things done” under his leadership.
Brown, who served 12 years as Natchez mayor, died at age 79 in April 2023. His three terms as Natchez mayor were from 1992 to 2000 and 2012 to 2016. His stint as MDOT executive director was from 2001 to 2011.
