NATCHEZ, Miss. – Adams County and Natchez officials today scrambled to find another place to dispose local garbage after the landfill that’s been used caught on fire north of the city.
The Adams County Board of Supervisors this morning approved sending county residents’ trash to a landfill south of town. In a separate meeting, the Natchez Board of Aldermen voted to do likewise for household garbage collected inside the city.
The Riverbend garbage dump in Jefferson County near Fayette was closed because of the fire, said city and county officials. They directed their privately contracted trash collectors to haul rubbish to the Plantation Oaks landfill in Adams County south of Natchez.
With costs higher using the Waste Management-owned Plantation Oaks, hopes are it’ll be a temporary arrangement until Riverbend can reopen.
Adams County Administrator Joe Murray said the state Department of Environmental Quality and Mississippi Emergency Management Agency this morning were overseeing efforts snuffing out the Riverbend fire.
With a place needed to haul local garbage picked up today and until Riverbend resume operations, the Natchez Board of Aldermen had a hastily-called emergency session to deal with the landfill issue. The county Board of Supervisors was already convened today for its regular second meeting of the month.
The county’s privately contracted trash collector is Metro Service Group of New Orleans. Arrow Disposal Service of Alabama picks up the trash for residents inside Natchez. Both Adams County and Natchez boards have contracts with Riverbend to bury the garbage in its landfill, located about 19 miles from Natchez on U.S. 61.
