NATCHEZ, Miss. – City aldermen on Tuesday approved a $2 increase in the garbage-collection fee Natchez households must pay each month. The $22.17 assessment attached to residents’ water bill goes up to $24.15 effective Aug. 1.
This is mandated by the contract Natchez aldermen have with Arrow Disposal Service to account for economic inflation. The increase “had to be done because of the cost of living and the rising costs of doing business,” said Alderman Billie Joe Frazier.
The new $24.15 garbage collection fee attached to Natchez Water Works customers’ monthly bills includes the $1 levy to help pay for the city’s mosquito-control measures.
Arrow provides three-times-a-week curbside trash collection service (one for recyclables) along with two large, wheeled garbage containers per household.
A previous monthly price increase was by nearly $5 in 2018, when Arrow got the city trash-collection contract to replace Waste Pro.
While Arrow has missed some scheduled pickups in recent weeks when beset by mechanical and personnel problems, Mayor Dan Gibson said he’s been pleased with the Alabama-based trash collector’s overall performance. However, as the contract with Arrow expires next May, Gibson said he and aldermen will be considering various “alternatives” for garbage collection.
“We want the best arrangement possible and the best services possible for our citizens,” Gibson said.
The city’s disposable garbage is now being hauled to Waste Management’s south Adams County landfill after several years of being taken to a landfill in Jefferson County near Fayette. The Board of Aldermen in May opted to go with WM’s Plantation Oaks waste dump at Sibley. Its $37-per-ton disposal charge is $9 less than what the Jefferson County landfill charges.

Two questions:
1) With decrease in population from almost 26,000 to less than 14,000, what are the tonnage figures on waste looking like?
2). Is the recycling material being recycled, and what is the tonnage being recycled.
