The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a flood warning for the Mississippi River at Natchez, affecting Concordia Parish in Louisiana, and Adams and Wilkinson Counties in Mississippi. Moderate flooding is anticipated from Monday, April 14, through Sunday, April 27.
As of 7:00 PM CDT on Thursday, the river stage was measured at 33.8 feet. The Mississippi River at Natchez is forecasted to rise above its flood stage of 48.0 feet starting Monday, April 14, reaching a crest of approximately 52.0 feet by Monday, April 21.
At a river stage of 51 feet, significant impacts are expected, including water covering roads in the old downtown area of Fort Adams. Residents are urged to prepare for flooding and exercise extreme caution, especially when traveling near flood-prone areas.
The NWS advises all residents and travelers in the affected regions to avoid driving through flooded roadways. “Turn around, don’t drown,” emphasizes the National Weather Service, as most flood-related deaths occur in vehicles. Enhanced caution is recommended during nighttime hours due to reduced visibility, making flooded roadways especially hazardous.
Continuous monitoring and updates on the river levels can be accessed via the National Weather Service’s website at www.water.noaa.gov/wfo/jan.
The next update regarding this flood situation will be provided by the NWS on Friday morning at 8:30 AM CDT.
