The Adams County Sheriff’s Office is alerting residents to a new text message scam circulating across the area. The message falsely claims to be from the Mississippi Department of Revenue and tells recipients that their tax refund has been processed. It then instructs them to click a link or provide banking information before a specified date.
Sheriff Travis Patten emphasized that the message is a scam and urged the public not to click any links, reply, or share any personal or financial information. “The Mississippi Department of Revenue will never send text messages asking for your personal or financial information, and they do not use outside links like the one shown in this scam,” Sheriff Patten stated.
Residents who receive the text are advised to take the following steps:
-
Do not respond or click any links.
-
Take a screenshot of the message if possible.
-
Report the incident to the proper authorities.
Reports can be made to:
-
Mississippi Department of Revenue: (601) 923-7000
-
Federal Trade Commission (FTC): reportfraud.ftc.gov
-
Adams County Sheriff’s Office, if any personal or banking information has already been shared.
The Sheriff’s Office encourages everyone to remain vigilant and to share this warning with friends, family, and neighbors. “Stay alert, stay informed, and always verify before you click,” Sheriff Patten advised.
