NATCHEZ, Miss. – Phillip West will continue serving on the Natchez-Adams school board. The former Natchez mayor has been on the board since 2016.
The Adams County Board of Supervisors on Monday reappointed West to another term in a 4-1 vote. Supervisor Kevin Wilson was the lone dissenter.
West and Wilson have tangled in past years over various issues, including the dispute between Wilson and the board over building the new Natchez High School that was partly financed with a property tax increase.
The Adams County Board of Supervisors appoints two school board trustees while the Natchez Board of Aldermen has three appointees.
The NASD Board of Education appoints the school superintendent, determines the local school tax levy and governs the operations of Natchez-Adams County’s seven public schools.
The school system’s overall academic performance improved in the past year, according to the state Department of Education’s A-F accountability system that evaluates how students perform. The most recent report card has NASD earning a C in the 2024-2025 school year after having been graded a D in previous years.
West was Natchez mayor from 2004 to 2008, but was defeated for re-election in 2008 and lost again in 2012 and 2020 when he tried comebacks. He previously served in the state Legislature and on the Adams County Board of Supervisors.
He sits on the school board with Amos James, LLJuna Grennell Weir, Brenda Robinson and Dianne Bunch.
