Cameron J. Brown, 22, of Ferriday, and Jaquarius Davis, 23, were booked into the Concordia Parish Correctional Facility. Police said that last Monday, at about 1:20 a.m., officers responded to a reported shooting at the Holiday Inn in downtown Shreveport. Officers found Derrick Wayne Coleman Jr., 32, dead from several gunshot wounds.
With assistance from law enforcement agencies in Louisiana, Mississippi, and Texas, investigators identified Brown and Davis as people allegedly involved in the case. Detectives said they anticipate making one additional arrest. A third suspect remains unidentified.
The Louisiana state education superintendent has issued guidance to school district leaders about handling student behavior. Dr. Cade Brumley’s letter urges school districts to take a firm stance against disruptive student behavior and said schools have been too tolerant. The letter states that Louisiana has made academic progress and should not allow inappropriate student behavior to deter it.
Brumley also referenced a House resolution adopted during the most recent legislative session that urges school districts to enforce Louisiana’s anti-bullying laws, describing forms of bullying that can include gestures, name-calling, spreading rumors, physical threats, and social exclusion.
In Mississippi, the State Department of Health is warning schools, parents, and athletes to take precautions against heat-related illnesses and head injuries as students return to school. The department said schools should require pre-participation physicals to help identify underlying health conditions, including heart issues, before students take part in sports.
The department said schools should use padded helmet headgear to reduce the risk of major head injuries, follow concussion protocols, and have trained personnel present during practices and games to monitor for signs of heat-related illness. It also recommended providing water, cooling stations, temperature monitoring, and having emergency measures in place to respond rapidly to heat-related medical issues.
In Northeast Louisiana, a new Meta artificial intelligence data center is contributing to an economic boost even before opening. Grow NELA CEO Rob Cleveland said the project has been under construction for 18 months and is driving increases in sales tax collections in Richland Parish and surrounding communities. Cleveland said the additional revenue will support local investments such as roads, infrastructure, sewer and water projects, and new parks.
Concerns have been raised about whether the data center could lead to higher electricity costs. Cleveland said Meta and Entergy have assured residents that electricity costs will not increase as a result, and that Meta is paying for the electric upgrade.
The Mississippi River level in Natchez-Vidalia was reported at 27.92 feet and falling.
