Louisiana Central has entered into a cooperative endeavor agreement with the Concordia Economic and Industrial Development District to strengthen economic development services across Concordia Parish. Louisiana Central said it looks forward to building on initiatives the county has already implemented, supporting work being carried out in the parish, and working together to create new opportunities, quality jobs, and long-term economic growth.
In Louisiana politics, the Louisiana Republican Party executive committee endorsed Blake Miguez in the 6th Congressional District race. The party described the endorsement as a nomination preference and said it looks forward to flipping the seat from Democratic to Republican in November. Miguez’s prominent Republican opponent in the open primary, Rick Edmonds, said the executive committee acted in defiance of the central committee, and he contended that more members backed him than backed Miguez.
Researchers at Mississippi State said they are monitoring for a new invasive species of tick and urged residents to understand how to help detect the pest. The Asian longhorn tick has been confirmed in Arkansas, Alabama, and Tennessee, and has been reported in more than 20 states. The tick was first discovered in New Jersey in 2017 after it infested a herd of sheep. Scientists described the tick as small and reddish brown without white coloration or spots, with short, wide mouth parts. They said it can appear in unusually large numbers clustered on livestock or other animals. The Asian longhorn tick is described as a major pest of livestock and as feeding on a range of animals, including birds, wildlife, and pets, and also people. For livestock owners, the recommended defense described was maintaining a livestock tick control program and keeping vegetation cut down.
SpaceX announced plans to build its largest rocket launching facility along the coast of Vermilion Parish. Governor Jeff Landry said the project is “monumental.” SpaceX said it is committing $100 billion in capital investment. In a social media post, Elon Musk said Starbase Louisiana will include more than a dozen launch towers that would support more than 30 Starship flights per day for its Starlink network and orbiting data centers. SpaceX President and Chief Operating Officer Gwen Shotwell said Starship would support plans including returning Americans to the moon and building a permanent moon base. SpaceX said construction begins next year and that launches from Pecan Island could start as early as 2029.
