Investigators are looking into a shooting on the Vidalia Riverfront over the weekend. Police said they were called to Merit Health Natchez around 2:15 a.m. Saturday after a man reported he had been shot on the riverfront. The victim was airlifted to UMMC for additional treatment and is expected to survive. Officers said they believe a large group formed at the riverfront after leaving a party in Natchez on Friday night, but they have not determined how the victim was shot. No arrests have been reported, and the investigation is ongoing.
Louisiana Lieutenant Governor Billy Nungesser has urged the nominee to lead the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to visit Louisiana to learn about the state’s seafood industry. Nungesser made the request in a letter to Senator Bill Cassidy, who is considering the nomination of Dr. Heidi Overton as FDA commissioner. Nungesser said he wants Overton to commit to cracking down on seafood imports, particularly regarding inspections, and asked that she visit Louisiana as part of her confirmation process.
A recent study by WalletHub found that Mississippians are the worst affected by student loan debt. The report ranked Mississippi first, followed by Delaware, Pennsylvania, and South Carolina. WalletHub said Mississippians face the highest student debt as a percentage of income, adjusted for cost of living. The study found the average amount owed by Mississippians with student loan debt is more than 54% of the state’s median income. It also reported that Mississippians carried the highest percentage of student loan balances that are past due or in deficit.
Louisiana is investing an additional $100 million in federal and state revenue into the fortified roof program. The program provides homeowners with grants of up to $10,000 to help pay for fortified roofs designed to better protect homes from hurricane-force winds. Louisiana Governor Landry said 5,500 homeowners have received grants since 2023, and that 48,000 homeowners are registered and waiting for grant opportunities. Louisiana Insurance Commissioner Tim Temple said fortified roofs can reduce insurance losses.
