Fiery exchanges between two Adams County supervisors this week required Sheriff Travis Patton to intervene and break up a heated argument. The confrontation occurred between supervisors Kevin Wilson and Ricky Gray after Wilson criticized the cost of traveling to Hawaii for a national conference of county leaders. Wilson argued the trip was a waste of county funds, while Gray defended the travel as a way for supervisors to gain information and resources that help them perform their duties.
In Louisiana, the House of Representatives has approved legislation that would allow public universities to keep private their spending of revenue-sharing dollars provided to athletes. If enacted, the public would not be able to see how much money athletes receive directly from universities or how much each sports program is allocated. Supporters argue the measure protects athlete safety and prevents competitive disadvantages. Opponents say the revenue is public money and should remain transparent. The bill passed the House 91 to 4 and now moves to the Senate for further consideration.
A new report from the National Institute for Early Education Research shows Mississippi has risen to 29th in the nation for preschool enrollment among four-year-olds, improving from 31st the previous year. National enrollment averages 37% for four-year-olds and 9% for three-year-olds. Mississippi’s state-funded pre-K programs enrolled 8,076 children in the 2024–2025 academic year, an increase of 931 from the year before.
The 2026 New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival opens today, featuring 5,000 musicians across 14 stages over eight days. Producer Quint Davis noted that while most performers are from Louisiana, major national acts help anchor the lineup. This year’s headliners include Rod Stewart. Davis also highlighted the festival’s distinctive food offerings, such as soft-shell crab sandwiches. Jazz Fest runs through May 3.
