Mississippi Forestry Commission officials announced burn bans due to hot August temperatures. The bans have been issued for six new counties statewide, including Franklin and Copiah Counties.
Copiah County’s burn ban is set to expire September 1, weather permitting. In Franklin County, the burn ban will not lapse until September 17.
In federal permitting, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers granted a permit for the new Louisiana International Terminal. The terminal is planned to be built 18 miles downriver from where the Port of New Orleans currently operates.
The Mississippi River around Natchez-Vidalia is reported at 19.12 feet and rising.
Mississippi Department of Public Safety Commissioner Sean Tindall announced he will run for Attorney General. Tindall said he will host campaign kickoff events across the state tomorrow, including a stop in Jackson at approximately 4:30 at the Mississippi Republican Party headquarters. Incumbent Attorney General Lynn Fitch announced earlier this month that she would run for governor of Mississippi.
A year has passed since the Amtrak Mardi Gras line began operations. The service connects New Orleans to Mobile, Alabama, with stops in four cities in Mississippi along the route.
