Natchez airport leaders are defending their request for $660,000 in county funding, saying the return of commercial air service is the justification. They said while the air service brings in revenue, it also increases expenses, including additional staffing, terminal operating costs, and TSA agents. The county has not yet made a decision.
The Louisiana Department of Revenue says people who received their Louisiana state tax refund by paper check and have not cashed it still have until tomorrow to do so, before the refund is transferred to the Unclaimed Property Division. Byron Henderson with the department said there are thousands of outstanding refunds still listed with the agency. The department reported notices were sent to 22,751 individual and business taxpayers, with those refunds totaling more than $17 million. The refunds were issued by paper check and the checks were not cashed. Henderson said if the money goes into unclaimed property, it is not forfeited and can be claimed either by returning the voucher attached to the notice or by visiting revenue.la.gov/unclaimed-property.
Multiple law enforcement agencies across Mississippi participated in a statewide operation aimed at identifying and reporting credit card skimmers. Attorney General Lynn Fitch said the operation, called Operation Stronghold, ran from July 31 through August 27 and resulted in more than 421 businesses being inspected and nearly 2,150 point-of-sale terminals examined. Fitch said three skimming devices were recovered during the operation. She reported that brings the total number of skimmers recovered in 2025 and 26 to 56, and said each skimmer is believed to represent an estimated $1 million in potential fraud loss.
With the Labor Day weekend approaching, gas prices are higher than a year ago. AAA Louisiana said the statewide average is about $3.72 per gallon, roughly a dollar more than the average at this time last year. Don Redmond with AAA Louisiana said Labor Day is not typically a major travel holiday because it falls shortly after most students’ school year starts, and historical precedent suggests the impact of high prices would likely be limited. He pointed to Fourth of July travel as an example.
