Man from Bastrop, Louisiana, is being sought for a string of thefts in and around Natchez. Multiple vehicles were reported to have been broken into, and one car was reported stolen late last week. The stolen vehicle was later recovered. Warrants are now out for 21-year-old Eric Harr of Bastrop, believed by law enforcement to be responsible for the thefts.
With construction of the Hyundai steel plant in Ascension Parish expected to begin, another group is raising concerns about the project. Angela Bradford with Louisiana Progress said the group has concerns about displacement and proper compensation for people who may be asked to move, as well as plans for those who intend to remain in their homes. Bradford also said Hyundai Steel should stick to its pledge to use electricity rather than burning coal to manufacture steel, citing impacts related to pollution and emissions. She also said she wants locals to receive first consideration for the thousands of jobs associated with the plant.
Claiborne County deputy Terrion Bailey was killed and a bystander was injured during a shooting in Mississippi. The Mississippi Department of Public Safety said the shooting occurred in the parking lot of Michael Dean’s Convenience Store near Hermanville around midnight. Deputies reportedly attempted to break up a crowd when gunshots were directed toward the group. Investigators said a woman was shot and taken to a hospital and is expected to survive. Claiborne County coroner Keon Neal identified the deputy as Deputy Sheriff Terrion Bailey. No suspect information has been released.
Today is observed as 9-8-8 awareness day, focused on raising awareness about the 9-8-8 suicide and crisis lifeline. Charade Crespo with Via Link said the service provides free, immediate and confidential emotional support 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Crespo said people can call or text 9-8-8 if they are dealing with stress, substance use concerns, thoughts of suicide, or if they simply need someone to talk to.
