NATCHEZ, Miss. – City aldermen have approved the acquisition of 10 new Natchez police cars.
Meeting Tuesday, the aldermen consented to Natchez Police Chief Lee Best’s request to get the new vehicles from Enterprise’s leasing division. Two of the vehicles will be unmarked for police administrators, Best said.
The Board of Aldermen has budgeted about $309,000 for lease-purchase expenses for the Natchez Police Department in the fiscal year that began this month.
“We’re grateful to see this continual renewal of our (NPD) fleet,” said Mayor Dan Gibson.
In other action Tuesday, aldermen approved:
— painting new traffic lane stripes on Canal Street from D.A. Biglane to Madison streets. The newly repaved thoroughfare has already been restriped from the Canal Street bridge to Biglane. Restriping the remainder of Canal will cost about $92,000: $25,000 to remove the temporary stripes placed there and $67,000 to mark with permanent stripes. The board awarded the work to Lane Line, a Flowood-based company.
— leasing to Baton Rouge the giant Christmas tree Natchez formerly used before the city got the new one that’s been the centerpiece of downtown Natchez during the holiday season. The Louisiana city will pay Natchez $5,000 a year for three years, according to the agreement between the two cities. The money will be earmarked for Natchez’ Christmas decorations.
— trimming live oak trees on the grounds City Auditorium at a cost of $7,700. The job was assigned to Landscape Resources of Natchez. Live Oak trees backing the auditorium are hanging over the building, which has recently been renovated.
