Residents across Adams County, Mississippi, and Concordia Parish, Louisiana, are being urged to exercise caution as dangerous fire weather conditions are expected across the Miss-Lou region heading into the weekend.
The National Weather Service (NWS) in Jackson has issued a Red Flag Warning for Friday, October 16, from 9 a.m. until 8 p.m., along with a Fire Weather Watch for Saturday, October 17.
A cold front moving through the region is expected to bring north winds of 15 to 25 mph, with gusts reaching up to 35 mph. Relative humidity levels are forecast to drop to between 25 and 40 percent, creating favorable conditions for fires to ignite and spread rapidly.
With vegetation already critically dry, officials warn that even a small fire could quickly grow out of control under these conditions.
Residents in Natchez, Vidalia, Ferriday, and surrounding communities are strongly discouraged from outdoor burning and should avoid activities that could produce sparks or open flames.
The National Weather Service has also issued a Fire Weather Watch for Saturday morning through Saturday evening, indicating that dangerous fire conditions could continue into the weekend.
A Red Flag Warning means critical fire weather conditions are occurring or expected soon, while a Fire Weather Watch indicates that conditions favorable for rapidly spreading wildfires are possible.
Residents are encouraged to remain alert, avoid outdoor burning, and monitor forecast updates throughout the weekend.
