NATCHEZ, Miss. — Alderman Valencia Hall wants her colleagues to consider more restrictions on golf carts that have become “out of control” since 2022, when the Board of Aldermen allowed them to cruise city streets.
Speaking at Tuesday’s meeting of the aldermen and mayor, Hall expressed alarm about the many golf carts “joyriding” in Natchez.
The board four years ago adopted the ordinance to allow golf carters to drive on low-speed city streets if they register the vehicles and pay a $100 fee. They must have various safety equipment to be street legal. Among the requirements: have front and rear turn signals, brake lights, seat belts and a windshield.
According to state law, a municipality may in its discretion authorize the operation of golf carts and low-speed vehicles on public streets.
It’s uncertain if the city board will heed Hall’s recommendation to reconsider its golf-cart ordinance.
