NATCHEZ, Miss. – Mayor Dan Gibson expressed hopes the prolonged work on Canal and Homochitto streets will be completed next month with newly finished surfaces and alignments to provide better traffic flow and smoother rides.
Gibson and the Natchez Board of Aldermen on Tuesday got a progress report on the final touches underway for the two busy thoroughfares. Aldermen also agreed to reconfigure turning lanes on Canal Street running from D.A. Biglane to High streets. With that being done, “we can put this behind us,” Gibson said of the street resurfacing project beset by delays and interruptions since it began in 2024.
The redesigned and restriped lanes at Canal’s intersections with State, Main, Franklin and Jefferson streets will be less confusing for motorists and help curb speeding, said city Public Works supervisor Justin Dollar. He also noted the reconfiguration will create more space for street parking.
Final touch-up work is being done on Homochitto and Canal streets. With that completed in a week or two, Homochitto’s new center stripes will then be applied first followed by the restriping of Canal beginning at the bridge near the Natchez National Historical Park Visitors Center, Dollar said.
The mayor pointed to the need to have this project completed by Oct. 16, when the Natchez Balloon Festival brings thousands of visitors and much traffic to Canal Street.
